To begin art one we start with line, black white, the basics.
I have realized that most ninth graders come to art one in high school without taking any art since elementary school, so I like to take time and teach basic drawing concepts before moving on. Drawing a still life has been an art practice long before the renaissance and is still relevant and important in todays art education, it helps students of art gain observation, and composition skills that are valuable beyond the art room.
This also helps me use basic supplies such as pencil paper and pen while I wait for the good stuff to get in (:
