Texture Tiles

When I introduced this lesson last semester I tagged it with earth days, and you'll see why when it comes to the lesson.Texture refers to the way an object feels to the touch or looks as it may feel if it were touched. Implied texture can be simulated or invented. The simulated texture is the type that is created to look like something it is not. For example, in drawing or painting of a cat where its fur is made to look like real fur.I wanted to put this idea of texture into real world perspectives with career implication today. I also wanted to incorporate how understanding texture is used by designers and artists in all fields.

Digital Texture Art!

I paired this video with the introduction of texture to show specifically how gaming artist build and imply textures in a virtual space. These transferable skills in drawing are what gaming artists use to develop the virtual worlds that my students are so fascinated with.

How To

introduce texture as a unit and its accompanying vocabularysend students on a scavenger hunt in school to collect recyclable item (side note: I fully trust the students I send out into the halls and give them a tie frame to be back, I would not recommend for a mischievous or rambunctious group. Also I  made sure to plan this before recycles are picked up in the week.)have the students create a sculpture on a 5x5 in square of card-stock that can be hot glued down. Have them keep in mind the elements of good composition.on a sperate 5x5in paper using graphite pencil create a detailed drawing of the items to create the illusion of texture.

Discussion Questions

what did you notice about the items you found in the recycle bins?how can we reduce our waste as a school?what did you notice about the sculptures you created? What problems did you face with making three-dimensional items adhere to a two-dimensional surface, how did you overcome them? What did you notice about the texture of the items you created, which ones were more challenging to replicate? How is texture a component in gaming?

These turn out really cool mounted side by side where you can see the 'real' and 'implied texture' comparatively.
